Das Kapital: Good eating at Berlin

TransitFabischLorenz AdlonHugosHorvathIt's getting to be a habit -- for the third year running Berlin is the official gourmet capital of Germany. Two eateries picked up their second Michelin star: the Lorenz Adlon (with chef Hendrik Otto) and Reinstoff (chef Daniel Achilles). It's an achievement in itself to nab a Michelin star, but more so considering that Otto only took over the Lorenz Adlon in April 2010 and Achilles opened Reinstoff's doors in March 2009, winning his first star just one year later.A new single-starred restaurant also graces Berlin's foodie firmament. Horvath, located in the artsy district of Kreuzberg, is home to chef Sebastian Frank, who left his native Austria, bringing the cuisine with him, only 18 months or so ago. Will success go to Frank's head and your wallet? Frank says he will continue to cook as before and the prices remain the same: "We understand this as confirmation of our work and are very happy," he says.Keeping their single stars are perennial gastro goodies Quadriga, Facil, First Floor, Hugos, Weinbar Rutz and Vau, while Fischers Fritz remains double starred. All this means Berlin now celebrates three two-star restaurants, with a city total of 13 stars, ahead of Munich's 11 and Hamburg's nine.Rival guide Gault Millau, which awards points instead of stars and favors experimental menus, named Tim Raue, of Restaurant Tim Raue, one of its best 12 chefs in the country, giving him a score of 19/20 -- Berlin's top-rating.Christian Lohse of seafoodery Fischers Fritz, the previous 19/20 holder, this time scored 18/20. This leaves him in joint silver position with the vegetable maestro Michael Hoffmann of Margaux. He bought and planted his own field to produce the "more surprise, more change, more emotion" the testers wanted.Quadriga, Facil, First Floor, Hugos, Rutz and Vau remain the unchallenged first division with 17/20. Gault Millau named Franz Hoeckner, of the Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin, its Barkeeper of the Year. It's important to note that reservations are essential, and increasingly more restaurants no longer accept EC, debit or credit cards, just cash.Platzhirsch on Arkonaplatz in the tony Mitte district is two living rooms joined together. It's a family-run, friendly and comfy restaurant specializing in neue Deutsche kueche (new German cuisine) with a Mediterranean flair. Everything is sourced locally, from the venison to the Brandenburg duck and the Havel River pike.Der Hahn Ist Tot! (The Cock Is Dead!) is where you choose from a sanely priced four-course menu that changes twice weekly. There are three or four starters, main courses and a couple of deserts. What you get is delicious, simple home cooking, German and French, no frills.Papa Pane di Sorrento is loud and crowded. If you want a quiet evening to talk business, go elsewhere. If you want huge starters that really need to be smaller to leave some room for the enormous main courses, including unfeasibly large pizzas and mounds of homemade pasta, then come here. It's great food at excellent prices.Remember a time when music came on black vinyl and not in bits and bytes? Il Giradischi (Italian for "turntable") does, with walls festooned with album covers and a menu designed as a double album, in its own sleeve. This is where to come for superb pizza, cooked in a wood-fired oven and eaten to the accompaniment of the records that diners select. The service is also genuinely Italian.Hamburger lovers won't find better than those at Bird. Big, juicy, make sure you eat one with plenty of beer.Taking its name from a department store once located on the site, Fabisch is the restaurant in the Circus Hotel at Rosenthaler Platz. Although it's easy to walk past, word has got out that this is where to come for more of the ever-improving and exciting new German cuisine, such as goose with dumplings and red cabbage or Havel fish. Of course, all ingredients are local and seasonal. The service is young, friendly and attentive. The combined dining room, bar and lounge makes lingering, either at your table or on one of the Chesterfield sofas, an excellent way to digest, helped by the great selection of wines, spirits and cocktails. Fabisch also has an inhouse cake maker, whose talents are a constant draw. The coffee is of the highest quality, too.Transit serves some of Berlin's best Southeast Asian cuisine. The food comes tapas-style, so order with abandon such delights as Almost Nude (a summer roll with shrimp, pork, fresh herbs and salad wrapped in thin rice paper), Bathing Beauty (homemade fresh steamed rice dough with chicken and morels), Undress Me (finely ground chicken and prawn wrapped in aromatic pandan leaves) and Yes Please (tender chicken breast in coconut milk with fresh mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, Laos root and cilantro).Reservations are essential. Any attempt to get in during the evening without one is as close to futile as it gets.Essential addressesTHE BIRDAddress: Am Falkplatz 5, 10437 BerlinHow to get there: U-Bhf/S-Bhf Schonhauser Allee, Tram M1Phone: +49 30 51 05 32 83EmailFABISCHAddress: The Circus Hotel, Rosenthalerstrasse 1, 10119 BerlinHow to get there: U8 Rosenthaler PlatzPhone: +49 30 20 00 39 34 60EmailIL GIRADISCHIAddress: Oderberger Strasse 22,10435 BerlinHow to get there: U-Bhf Eberswalder StrassePhone: +49 30 60 94 30 80DER HAHN IST TOT!Address: Zionskirchstrasse 40, 10119 BerlinHow to get there: U8 Rosenthaler Platz, Tram M1 or 12 ZionskirchplatzPhone: +49 30 65 70 67 56EmailPAPA PANE DI SORRENTOAddress: Ackerstrasse 23, 10115 BerlinHow to get there: S-Bhf Nordbahnhof, U-Bhf Rosenthaler Platz, Tram M8 or 12Phone: +49 30 28 09 27 01EmailPLATZHIRSCHAddress: Granseer Strasse 6, 10435 BerlinHow to get there: U-Bhf Bernauer Strasse, Tram M1 or 12Phone: +49 30 35 12 39 00EmailTRANSITAddress: Rosenthaler Strasse 68, 10119 BerlinHow to get there: U-Bhf Rosenthaler PlatzPhone: +49 30 24 78 16 45EmailPerennial favoritesFACILAddress: The Mandala Hotel, Potsdamer Strasse 3, 10785 BerlinHow to get there: U-Bhf / S-Bhf Potsdamer PlatzPhone: +49 30 59 00 51 234EmailFIRST FLOORAddress: Hotel Palace, Budapester Strasse 45, 10787 BerlinHow to get there: U-Bhf WittenbergplatzPhone: +49 30 25 02 10 20FISCHERS FRITZAddress: The Regent Hotel, Charlottenstrasse 49, 10117 BerlinHow to get there: U-Bhf Franzosische StrassePhone: +49 30 20 33 63 63EmailHORVATHAddress: Paul-Linke-Ufer 44a, 10999 BerlinHow to get there: U-Bhf Kottbusser Tor, U-Bhf SchonlienstrassePhone: +49 30 61 28 99 92EmailHOTEL ADLON KEMPINSKI BERLINAddress: Unter den Linden 77, am Pariser Platz, 10117 BerlinHow to get there: S-Bhf / U-Bhf Brandenburger TorPhone: +49 30 22 610EmailHUGOSAddress: Hotel InterContinental, Budapester Strasse 2, 10787 BerlinHow to get there: U-Bhf WittenbergplatzPhone: +49 30 26 02 0EmailLORENZ ADLONAddress: Unter den Linden 77, am Pariser Platz, 10117 BerlinHow to get there: S-Bhf / U-Bhf Brandenburger TorPhone: +49 30 22 61 19 59EmailMARGAUXAddress: Unter den Linden 78, entrance in Wilhelmstrasse, 10117 BerlinHow to get there: S-Bhf / U-Bhf Brandenburger TorPhone: +49 30 22 65 26 11QUADRIGAAddress: Brandenburger Hof Hotel, Eislebener Strasse 14, 10789 BerlinHow to get there: U-Bhf Augsburger StrassePhone: +49 30 21 40 56 51EmailREINSTOFFAddress: Edison Hofe, Schlegel Strasse 26, 10115 BerlinHow to get there: U-Bhf Naturkundemuseum, S-Bhf NordbahnhofPhone: +49 30 30 88 12 14EmailRESTAURANT TIM RAUEAddress: Rudi-Dutschke-Strasse 26, 10969 BerlinHow to get there: U-Bhf KochstrassePhone: +49 30 25 93 79 30EmailVAUAddress: Jagerstrasse 54, 10117 BerlinHow to get there: U-Bhf Franzosische Strasse, U-Bhf HausvogteiplatzPhone: +49 30 20 29 73 0EmailWEINBAR RUTZAddress: Chausseestrasse 8, 10115 BerlinHow to get there: U-Bhf Oranienburger Tor, U-Bhf NaturkundemuseumPhone: +49 30 24 62 87 60EmailReturn to the Berlin Preview >> Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Arrange It: The Fast Existence and Dying of the Season's Worst New Show

Kate Reinders, Rebecca Mader, Amaury Nolasco Because he walked before reporters only at that month's TV Experts Association press tour, ABC entertainment leader Paul Lee understood a guaranteed method of getting an increase from the put together reporters: "So, exactly what do you think about Arrange It?Inch The experts, who had christened the sitcom this season's worst new TV series, chuckled. So when Lee place the mix-dressing comedy from its misery a couple of days later, couple of tears were shed. Even ABC executives silently admit that actually work It had not been good - and left many audiences asking age-old question, "So how exactly does a significantly reviled show like making it towards the air to begin with?" When ABC acquired an astonishing 13 new scripted series this year, many (including, some claim, even Warner Bros. TV, the studio behind the show) were surprised to determine Arrange It out there. But Lee was charmed by Arrange It and thought there can be room around the agenda for a unique half-hour. "Sometimes you choose up an airplane pilot simply because it absolutely enables you to cackle with laughter, which was the situation with Arrange It,Inch he told reporters in the TV Experts Association press tour last This summer. "I make simply no excuses for your show." Lee also joked using the press that, like a British native (the land of Benny Hill), he could not help but be attracted to some mix-dressing farce: "I am a Brit, it's during my contract that I must do one mix-dressing show annually. So what can I actually do?Inch There is some truth to that particular, associates say. And despite the fact that the pilot to operate It had not been great ("It had not been easily the funniest in our aircraft pilots," understates one professional), it had strong auspices: Buddies alums Andrew Reich and Ted Cohen were executive producers. Based on Metacritic, which thumbs through TV reviews and assigns a grade to every show, Arrange It was the worst-examined new show of year to date, posting a minimal 19 from 100. That's most likely why ABC never even held a press tour session for that show. One professional nonetheless defends the pickup: "It had not been the worst show within the history around the globe. Also it would not be the very first reveal that experts did not like." Indeed, a significantly reviled show will still reach air because executives visit a glimmer of potential. "It isn't always apparent to us whenever we first notice as it can be to experts that the show is [terrible]," states one ABC rival. "Maybe something looks better after watching 3 or 4 bad aircraft pilots consecutively. Or something like that the thing is is stupid-funny and you receive a good reaction while screening it. Or simply a strange test provides you with false hope, or someone around the staff thinks inside it.Inch The rival professional notes that Lee seems to become prepared to take risks - witness the surprise success of shows like Not so long ago, Revenge and Suburgatory, none which were considered sure things this fall. "If Paul Lee was charmed because of it, then it is going to jump on the environment. And that he appears to become a 'Let's provide a go' guy." And that is apparently what went down. However the dismal reviews arrived. Based on associates, Lee's curiosity about the show dropped when the press condemned the show. "It grew to become your dog pile," one professional states. Adds another: "It might be a tournament to determine who might have the schmuckiest Tweet in regards to a new show." Making matters worse, special interest groups like GLAAD started to trash the show, accusing it to be insensitive to transgender people. Another joke, about Puerto Ricans, did not sit well with experts either. Ultimately, Arrange It committed two cardinal sins: It had not been funny, also it carried out totally within the rankings. However it wasn't a significant loss for ABC, which most likely did not spend much to produce the show anyway. Once the second episode of labor It published only a 1.5 rating among grown ups 18-49 on The month of january 10, ABC rapidly made the decision to replace it all with repeats of Last Guy Standing (enhancing time slot to some 2. rating the next week). As well as according to experts, all has become pardoned. ABC went from zero to hero by saying yes to place Cougar Town in Work It's place effective Feb 14. Still, one rival professional does not criticize ABC for giving Arrange It a try. "You will find 100 methods for getting around the air. Everyone knows all of the new comedies we placed on aren't great," he states. "But all of us use them and mix our fingers they bust out. You usually seem like a genius when you put onto [popular] that nobody saw coming." Sign up for TV Guide Magazine now!

Sundance Film Festival Review: 'Wish You Were Here'

Beautifully shot and with a memorable, tough-guy-meets-vulnerable-dad performance from Joel Edgerton, "Wish You Were Here" keeps threatening to become a first-rate mystery tale about secrets, lies and sex. Its story flits back and forth through time, unspooling a tale about a Cambodian holiday gone bad and the ramifications of an ecstasy-fueled party that leaves one man missing and the lives of his vacation mates in shambles. But there are a few weakly drawn characters and a rushed ending that leaves the timeline-hopping plot strands in an unsatisfying cinematic heap. It all made for an entertaining opening to the 2012 Sundance Film Festival on Thursday (January 19), but one that left us itching for some truly great festival films in the days to come. Edgerton plays Dave, an Australian boat builder and father of two, who jets off to Southeast Asia with his pregnant wife, Alice (Felicity Price), her sister, Steph (Teresa Palmer) and Stephs boyfriend, Jeremy (Antony Starr). They tour Cambodias towns, beaches and flea markets. The handheld camera work and rocking score make for a compelling travelogue in these opening scenes. One night, though, they pop pills (save, wisely, for Alice, who heads to bed early). The next day Jeremy is gone, and the remaining three are forever changed. What exactly happened on that drug-addled night is the mystery at the heart of Wish You Were Here, and first-time writer/director Kieran Darcy-Smith expertly builds suspense as secrets are revealed through flashbacks and emotional, present-day confessions. Dave clearly knows more than he initially lets on about what happened in Cambodia, and Edgerton perfectly conveys, often with one glance as the camera stays locked on his gaze, the extent of his anxiety-ridden guilt. Price, too (a relative unknown on American shores), delivers a layered, affecting performance as she learns, along with the audience, the brutal truths at the center of the film. Palmer, though, is given little to work with in the script, a problem not only of character but of storytelling, since her actions are so integral to driving the drama forward. Yet Wish You Were Here still manages to be a taut mystery until, that is, the films final act, as Darcy-Smith rushes to wrap everything up, leaving plot holes aplenty and a healthy dose of confusion. We wont give anything away, but we will say this. If the lessons of films like Midnight Express, Brokedown Palace and Return to Paradise werent already clear, let Wish You Were Here be the final word: travel abroad for the towns, beaches and flea markets and skip the drugs.
